I've wanted to go to Restaurant Week for a number of years, but for one reason or another, I always miss it. This year Nevada, my main squeeze, and I made sure we didn't miss out this year. For those of you who don't know, Restaurant Week is a week-long event where restaurants around San Diego create special prix fixe menus ranging from $10-$40. It's a great way to try restaurants that may either be outside of your budget or your everyday palate. We decided to try The Hake Kitchen and Bar in La Jolla Cove for lunch. We’ve passed it a few times on our strolls through the area and were curious. Plus, it’s a great spot to walk off a meal. The Hake specializes in Mediterranean cuisine, seafood in particular. If you're not a seafood fan, don't fret. The Hake also has a nice selection of meat dishes as well. Most of their food is served tapas-style, but they also have traditional entrees as well. Being the newbie that I am, I assumed that when we reserved seats for Restaurant Week, we would only be able to order from the prix fixe menu. Well, we all know what happens when you assume... It was a good thing I was wrong because Nevada was not feeling anything on the Restaurant Week menu. Instead, he decided to try the Seared Tuna Burger, which came with Cajun fries. Since Nevada is not a fan of Mayo, our waiter was kind enough to bring an alternative, Avocado Sriracha Spread. The smooth, spicy spread was a perfect complement to the slightly rare, lightly seasoned Tuna burger. The fries were absolutely delicious; crispy on the outside and soft in the middle with just a slight kick from the seasoning I, on the other hand, decided to be more adventurous and ordered from the Prix Fixe menu. The Restaurant Week menu gave a choice of an appetizer and an entree for $15. To start, I ordered the Tuna Tostada. The light, crispy tostada was topped with slices of fresh tuna and perfectly ripe avocado which sat atop a pozu scallion mayonnaise. And since you gotta have your veggies, it's topped with some crispy fried leeks. My absolute, hands-down favorite dish was the Hamachi Tiradito. This dish was the perfect blend of salty, sweet and sour. The Hamachi was melt-in-your mouth buttery. The dressing was a fresh blend of miso, caper and lemon. To finish, the dish was topped with thinly sliced jalapeño, garlic chips and a flourish of greens. In my opinion, the only thing missing was a bowl of rice to soak up all of that leftover dressing. (What can I say, I'm a rice girl!) I definitely plan on going back. Our waiter was super nice and helped us with our food choices. There are also quite a few items on the menu I would love to try. In particular, they have a couple of Octopus dishes that look yummy. They also have Sangria. I love Sangria! So if you're in La Jolla, check out The Hake Kitchen and Bar. You won’t be disappointed.
Happy Eating! Where did you go for Restaurant Week?
